The structure behind the phrase

Why do signs say se habla español (Spanish speaks itself) instead of we speak Spanish?

The answer isn’t the translation — it’s the middle layer, where English word order is rearranged into Spanish logic before a single word is swapped.

Itself speaks Spanish.
The Spanish
Se habla español.

The rule

This is the impersonal/passive “se.” When no specific doer matters, Spanish uses “se” + a verb that agrees with the thing: “se habla español” = “Spanish is spoken” (literally “Spanish speaks itself”). It avoids naming a subject entirely. Plural noun, plural verb: “se venden casas” = “houses are sold / for sale.”

Reading the structure is step one. Feeling it is the moat — watch the words physically rearrange, then say your own sentence and the bartender answers.
